Mainly, prudence is the conscious decision to choose what is right over what one may see as possibly and inconveniently wrong. Although we may have very distinct and universal sense of right and wrong, values differ from country to country and even from one region to another in just one country so, sometimes, certain values do affect our sense of prudence.

For example, in our culture in the Philippines it is acceptable or even necessary to point out a piece of crumb or a smeared sauce on our friend's pretty face or even on the chin of someone we've just met. In certain parts of Europe, however, it is exactly the opposite that is expected of us. People are just not allowed to put someone in an embarrassing position by pointing out that there is something wrong with a person’s eating accident or eating habit. Pointing out that one is a pig is distasteful to some. Hence, you must not point out the remnants of food clinging near one’s mouth - In Europe. You just silently wish the other person the luck of being able to find out for himself in front of a mirror. Prudence, in this case is variable according to the accepted behavior in any particular location. So, knowing now what is ‘right’, one will point out the crumbs to one’s friend in the Philippines while ignoring the limp noodle hanging at the corner of the mouth of your friend from Belgium, even if you guys happen to be in Greenbelt3.

In our local society, we are just maturing in terms of social graces and in being conscious of other people’s welfare. For instance people still don’t follow the keep to the right right of way when walking along corridors, school hallways, or mall aisles. A few people observe the rule of thumb that people inside the elevator or the train should all be let out first before we squeeze in front of everybody else, unless there is actually a queue. Barkers have eliminated this kind of nuisance in jeepney lines benefitting us Filipinos and jeepney riders - for a minor profit of course.

Inside the cinemas, people still leave their cellphones non-silent and worse they even make or receive calls and have conversations with everybody else hearing the non-sense monologue instead of the killer lines in the film . Some prudent people have learned not to do this even without any animated or animatronic characters in the screen telling them to put their phone in the off position.


The best guides in prudence are the oldest ones:

1) Do UNTO OTHERS only what you WANT to be done UNTO YOU.
Or the DO NOT DO UNTO others version.

2) When in doubt, DON’T!

3) The THOU SHALL NOTs keep peace in the land and also keep one out of jail.

In practice, there are truths I [we should] live by:

1) Always use condoms – something that Trust is promoting to our YOUTH.

2) I don’t sleep with other people’s boyfriends.
I just steal them away first to ease my conscience.

3) I never tell a lie when I know I will be found out.

4) Don’t ask people probing or probably embarrassing questions
the answers just might not be that interesting afterall


Life is never complicated if we leave others alone. Right and wrong varies in every location so keep to the right. Simple.
